The project, a renovation and third floor addition to an existing 1960’s spilt level ranch on a difficult sloped site adjacent to the historic Old Croton Aqueduct in Irvington New York, required an almost complete reimagining of the site and the existing structure to accommodate the owners modern, landscape based lifestyle. The low sloped roofs were replaced with cantilevered flat roofs and new windows were positioned for privacy and views to the wooded hillside behind. The new master suite includes a southern facing balcony taking maximum advantage of sun angle. A central tower enclosing the new stair transformed the expression of the structure from horizontal to vertical, allowing it to better complement the steep, wooded site.
